My Dearest Daughter,
As we are about to celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, I am asking myself: where does the time go? And what does the future hold?
As I sit down to write this letter to you, my heart swells with love, pride, and a profound sense of responsibility. As a founding member of Women Leaders in Pharma, it is a responsibility that isn't just about paving the way for future generations of women, but also about ensuring that you, and every young woman like you, have the courage, support, and opportunity to fulfill your dreams.
Women are powerful – we are a force to be reckoned with. We are the catalysts for change, the innovators, the leaders. And in an industry as dynamic and complex as the Canadian pharmaceutical industry, our voices are needed now more than ever.
That's why I helped create Women Leaders in Pharma (WLP). During “un cinq à sept” in the Fall of 2018, a group of likeminded leaders from different companies came together – women who were experiencing challenges from a career growth standpoint, feeling a sense of inequity in their organizations. We decided to pool our efforts together and support one another – and WLP was born.
From our first meeting in February 2019 (where we weren’t entirely sure anyone would come out on a cold winter’s night amidst a massive snowstorm), we have now grown into a community of extraordinary women who empower each other, connect ideas, and inspire future leaders. It’s a place where women can find support, guidance, mentorship, and encouragement as we navigate the challenges and opportunities of our careers in the pharmaceutical industry.
I was asked recently what advice I would give you. Simply put: don’t settle. Go for it. When you have a goal or ambition, believe in yourself, and surround yourself with people who uplift you. In both personal and professional endeavors, having a supportive network is crucial. Be a part of something bigger than yourself.
And for young women starting their careers, I encourage you to pursue your passions relentlessly. Don’t let anyone deter you from your path. Seek out mentors, allies, and opportunities for growth. Surround yourself with others who believe in you and champion your success. And if you’re unsure, remember that WLP is here for you every step of the way. Together, we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and balanced industry – one where women thrive, patients benefit, and companies prosper.
Ma fille chérie, I want you to know that the world is yours for the taking. I am here for you, cheering you on every step of the way. Your hopes are valid, your voice is powerful, and your potential limitless. And as you pursue your dreams, remember that you are never alone.
